king of the new world

i emailed a friend recently a thought i've been playing with:

ok, so i was thinking,
when you were a kid did you ever wish you were a queen?
i used to dream about being a king or prince
and being on top of the world
maybe it was about control
or being able to have whatever i wanted
i'm not sure
but the idea of being a king
was more about controlling my situation
more so than controlling the villagers
it wasn't a power thing 
and i've been thinking lately about my current situation
where i live
where i work
what i have 
what i've done
where i've gone 
how i feel 
(you know, all those things i think about all the time) 
but i recently realized how lucky i am
out of the 6 billion people on earth
the luxuries i have in my life
the decisions i'm able to make for myself
the things i buy
the things i see
the things i enjoy doing... 
i'm in the top 1% in the world
and you are too
and most of our friends and family are too 

so i did some quick research
there are 6.53 billion people on earth
there are 65 million people in the upper 1%
that's not a lot of people
i got worried we might not be in the 1%
so i looked up the number of millionaires in the world: 3 million 
we're definitely in the top 1%
we are the kings and queens
we have luxuries and Choice and the ability to decide our futures 

how amazing is that? 
how fortunate are we? 

it really helps to think that we are more privileged than more than 99% of the inhabitants on earth
so when work isn't going well
or i feel boring and completely uncreative 
or lonely
or insecure
i have to realize that i have opportunities that most people don't.
